  • The purposes of this research are to determine and calculate the cost of carbon dioxide (CO2) from coal energy emitted to atmosphere, to compare the CO2 emitted from coal energy burning process with the standard of the CO2 compliance emitted to atmosphere, and the alternative energy offered to reduce coal energy consumption. The CO2 emission is the most affecting factor for greenhouse gases causing global warming which are resulting climatic changes and unstable ecosystems. The research object chosen from the manufacturing industry is PT Semen Padang due to the biggest manufacturing industry in Padang, west Sumatra. PT Semen Padang is using coal energy as its mainly source of burning process to produce cement and it results that the consumption of coal energy from year to year is increasing due to the additional tonnage of cement produced. As the consequence, the CO2 emitted from coal energy in producing cement is also getting increased. Therefore, the reduction of coal energy consumption must be gradually reduced to save the ecosystems and earth. One of the effective ways, the cement industry can substitute coal energy into alternative energy using rice husks such as applied in Holcim. Rice husk is a biomass energy that has no impact on greenhouse gases since it emits no CO2. It is relatively cheaper and has no influence to global warming. Another idea offered to overcome the CO2 emission from coal energy is the power project, called the Waste Heat Recovery Power Generation (WHRPG) that is carbon trading between Japan and Indonesia whereas Japan, the country has emitted relatively low CO2, should buy the CO2 emission from the country which emit higher CO2.
