- Technological progress created new paradigm that called "the network age" and it make technology as a tool of human development. This new paradigm view that exchange rate depreciation is not determinant of competitiveness anymore, but now innovation is a major determinant of export performance. The aim of this paper is to analysis the characteristic of Indonesian national innovation system and Indonesian export structure. This paper shows that the characteristics of Indonesian national innovation system is still weak. This is shown by some indicators that can measure national innovation. Indonesia's position showed by indicators are still far behind compare with other southeast Asian countries and China. Based on this fact, can conclude that, if Indonesia does not immediately fix the National Innovation System, this will make Indonesia not too benefited from the enactment of CAFTA.
