- In vitro antimicrobial activity of ten sponge species (Porifera), collected from offshore zone of Painan, West Sumatera, against isolated strains of bacteria Vibrio cholera were conducted in this study. The extracts of each sponge were evaluated through the disk diffusion assay. The results showed that 80% (8 from10 extracts) of the sponge extracts presented activity against Vibrio cholera. The two most active sponges against tested bacteria were: Petrosia nigrans and Axinella sp.
