  • Background: The usage of hand antiseptic gel in gel form has become a lifestyle on middle to upper class citizen. Various antiseptic products; especially antiseptic gel hand sanitizer has been wildly developed. Antiseptic was made in gel form because of it is convenience and spread evenly upon contact to skin and nice to used because it feels cold on skin caused gel contains a lot of water. This product were considered effective in killing bacteria on hands, as a method to reduce the amount of bacteria that enter the body. Areca nut has a metabolite compound such as tanin and flavonoid that has antibacterial effect. Objective: To know the antibacterial activity of Areca nut extract (Areca catechu L.) along with formulating hand sanitizer gel from Areca nut extract and to know the antibacterial activity of gel hand sanitizer from Areca nut extract. Method: Making of Areca nut extract by soxhlet using ethanol 96% solvent and evaporated in waterbath to one third. The extract of Areca nut conducted antibacterial activity test with concentration of 500 mg/mL, 400 mg/mL, 300 mg/mL, 200 mg/mL, 100 mg/mL, 50 mg/ml, 40 mg/mL, 30 mg/mL, 20 mg/mL, 10 mg/mL, 5 mg/mL. The extract of Areca nut were made into hand sanitizer gel with concentration of (F1) 300 mg/mL, (F2) 350 mg/mL, and (F3) 400 mg/mL. Evaluation of gel preparation includes antibacterial test, organoleptic, viscosity, pH, homogenity and stability. Result: Antibacterial test showed that minimum inhibitory levet at 5 mg/mL of extract of Areca nut against Escerichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus showed 6.45 mm and 6.5 mm inhibitory diameter. While the test result of Areca nut hand sanitizer gel activity obtained minimum inhibitory on Escerichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus with (F1) 300 mg/mL was 11.2 mm and 11.8 mm, (F2) 350 mg/mL was 12.22 mm and 13.53 mm, (F3) 400 mg/mL was 12.40 mm and 14.16 mm . Conclusion: Hand sanitizer gel preparation of Areca nut extract can inhibit Escerichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus growth. The best inhibitory concentration was in Formula 3 of 400 mg/mL of Areca nut extract.

Areca nut has a metabolite compound such as tanin and flavonoid that has antibacterial effect. Objective: To know the antibacterial activity of Areca nut extract and antibacterial activity of Areca nut extract hand sanitizer againts Escerichia coli and Staphylococus aureus and to show the different concentration activity Areca nut extract hand sanitizer had as antibacterial againts Escerichia coli and Staphylococus aureus. Method: Making of Areca nut extract by soxhlet using ethanol 96% solvent and evaporated in waterbath to one third.
