- The data obtained from Medical Record of Sumatera Utara Province Mental Hospital showed that, in 2008 it was recorded 1814 in-patients, and 13.536 out-patients, while in 2009 it was recorded 12.377 out-patients and 1929 in-patients. The record in the cates that number of mental disorders is increasing every year. This purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to analyze the effectiveness of the lecturing and a simulation methods on family behavior about mental health in the outpatient wards of Mental Hospital Sumatera Utara Province in 2010. The population and sample of this study were the family of mental disorder in patients with visiting the outpatient wards of Mental Hospital Sumatera Utara Province. The sample for this study were 60 persons who were divided into two groups.The experimental group I were treated with lecturing method and the experimental group II were treated with simulation method. The results of this study showed that the highest average difference of the score of knowledge (7.07 with standard deviation of 2.36) was found in the group which was health education through simulation method. The score of attitude found in the group which was given health education through simulation method was higher (14.3 with standard deviation 0f 1.96). The score of action found in the group which was given health education through simulation method was even higher (7.53 with standard deviation of 1.96). The result of T-independent test showed that the simulation method was more effective in improving the knowledge (P = 0.000), attitude (P = 0.001) and action (P = 0.036) on the mental health at the outpatient wards of Mental Hospital Sumatra Utara Province in 2010. To achieve the optimal result, the health promotion workers are suggested to use the simulation method in providing mental health education to the family members of the patients with mental disorder.
