- Initial surveys conducted by researchers at the date of 09 March 2010 in PT. Gold Coin Indonesia showed that high potential of dust concentrations of workers such as exposure to dust in the area of corn milling, which can lead to workers suffering from lung function. In addition, there are still many workers who do not wear masks at work and many workers complained of breathing problems, coughing during work or after work. This study purpose to analyze the influence of worker characteristics (working of period, work duration, smoking habits, personal protective equipment) and the concentration of dust on pulmonary function disturbances in the animal feed industry in 2010. Research method is Observational with Cross Sectional Study approach. The sample were all population amount of 34 workers. Data collected by the measurement concentration of dust in the workplace and worker lung function measurement. There are five rooms that have dust concentrasion above the threshold value of packing, drilling, warehouse, mixer and receiving. Data analysis used program SPSS 15 with multiple linear regression Statistic Test of 95% confidence limit. Result of the research showed that there were significant influence of worker characteristics (working of period, work duration, smoking habits, personal protective equipment) and the concentration of dust on pulmonary function disturbances. It is recommended to plant management to provide appropriate respiratory protective equipment and provide penalties for workers who do not use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when working. Increased awareness of workers to use PPE in work to reduce direct exposure to dust and protect the respiratory tract from dust.
