- This research is made to investigate the study of CBN wear on high speed turning of AISI 4140 at cutting hard and dry conditions. Cutting tool is made from CBN CB7015 Sandvick Coromant which is used to operate turning of AISI 4140 in order to get tool wear modes and the mechanisms of tool wear. Machining process carried out in dry cutting conditions with variations in high speed, feed rate, and depth of cut on maximum speed conditions. Growth curve obtained shows that the wear of CBN cutting tool having three phases, namely the initial phase, the gradual phase and the abrupt phase. From this research, it is found that the tool wear modes occured are flank wear, crater wear, flaking and chipping, whereas at the cutting speed that exceeds its maximum limit at V=267 m/minute will occur fractures (fracturing catastrophic failure). Wear mechanisms are mostly caused by abrasive processes, adhesive processes, and diffusions processes. Meanwhile, cracks and fractures are caused by a combination of impact load and thermal shock.
