  • Jamu gendong is one of the traditional medicine that were enthuased by society because cheap, easily obtained and its utilization is wide enough, can be used by different age groups, gender and health condition. It has liquid form, unconserved and circularized without denoting. Jamu gendong made in home industry scale by using simple tools and human resources in its production. This allowed lack of hygiene during the manufacturing process, so it could be expected to cause the contaminant of jamu gendong which is produced. The purpose of this study is to discover the contaminant of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria which are contained in jamu gendong seller in Medan. Designed used in this study was descriptived and jamu gendong were sample, organoleptic observation, sample homogenity and investigation of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria in jamu gendong. Bacteriologis investigation involved the bacteria presence, persumptive test, confirmation test, isolation, microscopic test, identification and confirmation of bacteria. Identification and confirmation involved indol test, biochemical reaction test and citrate test. The finding of observation foward the contaminant of Escherichia coli bacteria in persumptive test is all sample contained gas. The result of confirmation test show that from all samples, there were only three samples contained gas. The result of isolation show that the three samples are shown round colony but only one of them which had red brick colony. The result of microscopic test show that there were stem form bacteria in the three samples. From the result identification and confirmation, indol test that there were a cherry red ring in the two samples on medium surface. The result of biochemistry reaction test show that the colour of medium changed into yellow in all three samples and they were not formed sediment but only one sample estabilished gas. The result of citrate test show that from the three samples, only one sample which was not shown the changing of medium colour. The result of contaminant of Staphylococcus aureus in richness and confirmation test show that from all samples only one sample was turbidity. The result of microscopic test show that there was no wine shaped bacteria. The result of this study show that one of the fifth samples which was investigated, contaminated by Escherichia coli but there was no sample which was contaminated by Staphylococcus aureus bacteria.
