  • Background: There is substantial increase in end stage chronic kidney disease patients during these past years which cause an increase in patients who is on hemodialysis. Hemodialysis causes unwanted side-effects, such as nausea and loss of appetite. These effects cause changes in patient’s body weight which will then affect the body mass index. Body mass index has been proven important in predicting the prognosis of patients who are going through hemodialysis, so it is also important that we are able to acknowledge the relationship between the length of hemodialysis and the changes in body mass index in chronic kidney disease patients going through hemodialysis. Methods: This study was done in hemodialysis centre in Haji Adam Malik Medan Hospital. Samples in this study was taken using total sampling. From total population in hemodialysis centre, 117 patients match the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data such as length of hemodialysis, body weight and height (1st dialysis and current) were taken from all the samples., difference in body mass index is then calculated. All data was then processed and interpreted using SPSS (Statistics Package for Social Science). Results: There is no significant relationship found between length of hemodialysis and changes in body mass index presented by the data analysis results showing Pearson correlation of -0,06 (very weak) and significancy value of 0,951 (insignificant). Conclusion: There is no significant relationship between length of hemodialysis and changes in body mass index in end stage chronic kidney disease patients who are going through hemodialysis in RSUP Haji Adam Malik Medan.
