- This research was being held in the Agricultural Faculty of North Sumatera University, Medan on March until June 2009. The aim of this research was to studied the effect of giving sea water and some organic matters on chemical alteration of ultisols properties and the growth of maize plants (Zea mayz L.). This research use randomized block design with 2 factors and 4 replications. The first factor is the treatment of sea water of 20% of soil field capacity and 40% of soil field capacity. The second factor is the treatment of organic matters which consits of control, peat soil (equivalent to 5% of organic soil matters), sludges of palm oil mill factory (equivalent to 5% of organic soil matters), blotong sugarcane (equivalent to 5% of organic soil matters). The results showed that the application of sea water increased the Electric Conductivity (EC) and Potassium exchangeable of ultisols but reduced the root of dry weight. Giving blotong sugarcane increased rapidly pH, organic carbon, Calcium exchangeable, dry weight root, dry weight of crown and height of plant canopy. Peat soil is more reduce EC than blotong sugarcane and sludge of palm oil mill factory. Sludge of palm oil mill factory more increase Total of nitrogen, Potassium exchangeable, Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC) and decrease the C/N ratio of ultisols.
