  • Cancer is the abnormal formation of new tissue which is malignant and uncontrolled. It is caused by disruption of the cell cycle due to mutations of genes regulating growth, which occurs due to induction by a mutagen, such as chemicals, radiation, free radicals and infection of several viruses. Free radicals cause mutations which leads to DNA damage. Compounds that can neutralize free radicals so mutations will not take place are known as antioxidants, for example flavonoids and poliyphenols. Ceremai leaves contain flavonoids and polyphenols that have been observed to have antioxidant activity alleged to have anticancer effects. The simplex was characterized based on the Materia Medika Indonesia and extracted with 96% ethanol by percolation. Phytocemical screening was carried out on simplex and ethanol extract of Ceremai leaves and anticancer screening was carried out on male mice using micronucleus method, given orally 1 time a day for 7 days with a dose of 200 mg/kg bw, 400 mg/kg bw dan 800 mg/kg bw. Cyclophosphamide with dose of 30 mg/kg bb is used as an inductor of the occurrence of micronucleus cells and CMC 1% suspension as extract solvent From the statistic analysis, it is showed that the administration of ethanol extract of ceremai leaves was able to reduce the number of micronucleus cells formed significantly to the positive control group (p < 0.05). Thus, it is concluded that ethanolic extract of the ceremai leaves has anticancer activity. The result of the anticancer effect test showed that the ethanolic extract of ceremai leaves dose 800 mg/kg bw reduced the number of micronucleus cells statistically similar to normal controls. The ethanolic extract of ceremai leaves dose 800 mg/kg bw reduced the number of micronucleus cells more than the extract of leaves ceremai dose of 200 mg/kg bw and 400 mg/kg bw.
