  • Smoking causes several changes in human body parts, including saliva. Literature study shows that smoking can turn salivary pH becomes more acidic and acidic pH causes enzyme that belongs to it works improperly. The goal of this research is to identify the effect of smoking to the salivary pH and the relationship between this salivary pH with its amylase enzyme activity This cross-sectional study was conducted in analytical descriptive method, with 32 respondents were chosen, every each of them smoking a minimum 5 cigarettes a day for at least 1 year. It was conducted between October – November 2010 at the biochemistry laboratory of Medicine Faculty of North Sumatera University. Sample chosen with the total sampling method using questionnaire, and subject’s saliva directly measured using pH meter and Benedict test by the researcher. Results of the study analyzed with the statistical chi-square (X2), using SPSS software. From the statistic analysis test, p - value is < 0.05 (total cigarretes consumption a day with the salivary pH shows p - value = 0,006; salivary pH with the activity of salivary amilase anzyme shows p - value = 0,002). It is shown that there is a significant correlation between total cigarettes consumption a day with salivary pH and salivary pH with the activity of salivary amylase enzyme. However, it is found that there is no correlation between the period of smoking with the salivary pH. With the p-value > 0,05 (p-value= 0,946) shows that there is no a significant relation between the period of smoking and salivary pH. In conclusion therefore, there is a correlation between total cigarettes consumption and salivary pH and salivary pH affects the activity of amylase enzyme that belongs to it.
