  • Background: Enteric parasites are major cause of diarrhea in AIDS individuals. Thus, the consequences of parasitic diseases are among the major health problems in tropical developing countries. Methods: The study was carried out in Haji Adam Malik General Hospital Medan, North Sumatra between July and November 2010 among 32 enrolled patients on Antiviral Therapy (ART) aged from 18 to 65 years old, of both sexes. Each study participant was provided with a fecal vial for microscopic examination of ova, larvae and cyts. Objective: The present study was undertaken to detect intestinal protozoas in AIDS individuals presenting with or without diarrhea. Results: Intestinal protozoas were detected in 15.6 percent patients, and the major protozoas include Entomoeba histolytica ( 12.5% ) and Cryptosporidia sp. ( 3.1% ). Conclusions: It can be concluded that the prevalence of protozoan infection in AIDS in-patients at Haji Adam Malik General Hospital is 15.6 percent.
