  • One of the effort to decline the Infant Mortality Rate is to promote the implementation of Early Initiation and exclusive breastfeeding. Based on preliminary survey, the coverage of exclusive breastfeeding in Padangsidimpuan City as 0%. Currently health promotion media that designed and distributed by the Ministry of Health was not effective in changing the mother’s behavior. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of health promotion media (leaflets) in changing knowledge and attitude of pregnant women about Early Initiation and exclusive breastfeeding at the District of South Padangsidimpuan, Padangsidimpuan City in year 2010. This research was quasi experimental. Population were all third-trimester pregnant women in the District of South Padangsidimpuan Padangsidimpuan city. Sample were 40 people for each group that carried out randomly in the treatment group and educational matching in the group had no treatment. Research was designed with pre-post design and to examined the effectiveness of media used t-test. The results showed that the health promotion media (leaflets) was effective to raise the scores of knowledge and attitude scores of pregnant women about Early Initiation and exclusive breastfeeding at the District of South Padangsidimpuan in year 2010 were p=0.000. It is recommend to the Head District of Health in Padangsidimpuan to: 1) use a leaflet in developing appropriate health promotion strategies with the needs of local communities, 2) consult with communications and media experts to get a better media quality, 3) mobilize health workers to distribute Early Initiation and exclusive breastfeeding media to pregnant women.
