- Cooking oil is one of the basic commodities, is highly needed by the Indonesian people, especially by housewives. Consuming reused cooking oil can cause serious diseases; therefore, there is an effort to use the reused cooking oil effectively in order that it does not soil the environment by reprocessing it as natural cooking oil or as materials from which liquid soap is made. The sample of the research was the reused cooking oil for frying tofu and tempe (soybean cake) after it had been reused one to four times in the researcher’s own house. This reused cooking oil was used by purifying process which consisted of three steps: despicing process, filtering process, and neutralizing process in which the despiced reused cooking oil was reacted with 15% KOH and bleached by using 240 mesh active carbon, 7,5% of the weight of the reused cooking oil. The purified-reused cooking oil was used to make liquid soap through saponification with two variables: KOH (%): 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and the processing temperature (0C): 25, 35, 45, 55. The reused and the purified cooking oil’s free fatty acid (FFA), iodine value (IV), color, and water content were analyzed with Lovibond Mode E.The saponifying process was done by using OACS Cd 3b-76-200. The materials used were the purified cooking oil, KOH (%): 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, one of ml non-alcohol parfumenwith apple fragrance, one ml food dye with apple green extra number 2093 (14% color content), and 10 ml natural dyes (pandanus, betel vine, and saffron). The result of the research showed that the optimum result was obtained from one time use of the reused cooking oil by using 7,5% of 240 mesh active carbon. The analysis of the purified cooking oil showed that FFA content = 0,27%, IV = 46,47 meq; its color is comprised of yellow = 39, red = 4,3, and blue = 0, and its water = 0,35; all of them had fulfilled SNI 3741-1995 (the quality standard of cooking oil), i.e., FFA content = max 0,3%, IV = 45 – 51 meq, and water content = 0,3%. The saponifying value was analyzed by using 30% KOH and the operating temperature was 45 – 550C so that the saponifying value was relevant to the qua;ity standard of the liquid soap of SNI 06-3532-1994, i.e., the saponifying value = 196 – 206.
