  • Pahala L. L. Sianturi. Seed Viability of Yam bean (Pachyrhizus erosus (L) During Four Months Storage with Different Levels of Moisture Content in Various Packaging. This study aims to find the simplest and most effective way to maintain the best seed quality during 4 months storage, and to know the physiological changes of seeds during storage. The research was conducted at the Laboratory of Balai Pengawasan dan Sertifikasi Benih IV Dinas Pertanian Propinsi Sumatera Utara. The experimental designed used in this study was completely randomized design (CRD) using 2 factors and 3 replications. The first factor is the initial moisture content of seeds (A) which is 9% (A1), 11% (A2) and 13% (A3). The second factor is the packaging (K), namely Cans ( 8 cm height x 7.5 cm diameter) (K1), polyethylene plastic pouch (15 cm x 15 cm) (K2) and aluminum foil pouch (15cm x15cm) (K3). Variables measured include moisture content, germination, germination rate, seedling dry weight, respiration and electrical conductivity are performed every 4 weeks. The results showed that initial moisture content of seeds significantly affect seed viability, the best seed viability is at the initial moisture content of seed 9%. Treatments of type of packaging provided significant effect on seed viability, the best seed viability is aluminum foil packaging. Combination treatment of initial moisture content of seeds and type of the packaging in general was not significantly affect seed viability parameters (except at the rate of respiration and electrical conductivity). The best seed viability quantitatively obtained in combination treatment of initial moisture content 9% and aluminum foil packaging.
