- Energy drink consumption has continued to gain in popularity since 1997. In 2006, more than 500 new energy drinks were introduced worldwide. Research shows that 51% of university students consume more than one energy drink per month. A research on the effect of energy drink consumption was done to study the energy drink consumption pattern and its effect on consumers. This research was conducted to determine the widespread of energy drinks consumption among users of energy drinks so that awareness of the side effects can be raised among students. This is a qualitative descriptive study. The study was cross-sectional. The study population was 94 students of Fakultas Kesehatan Masyarakat Universitas Sumatera Utara, Medan, aged 18-25 years. Samples were selected using the simple random sampling method. From research conducted, 37.2% (35 persons) of students have never consumed energy drinks. Of these, 85% (17 people) are male students and 24.3% (18 people) are females. As much as 94.3% of students consumed energy drinks 1-4 times a month. On the average, 25.7% of students use energy drinks to maintain their stamina throughout workout sessions. The effects that most students expressed are the increase in body energy (28.6%) and overcome fatigue (28.6%). The most popular energy drink brand among students of this faculty is Extra Joss (51.4%). Most of the students surveyed stated that there were no side effects from the use of energy drinks (60%). Based on research that has been done on the effect of the use of energy drinks among college students of FKM USU, it can be concluded that the main use of energy drinks is to maintain the stamina while workout sessions. The most widely perceived effects after consuming energy drinks are increase in body energy and eliminating fatigue.
