- Trichominiasis is a sexually transmitted disease caused by the parasite Trichomonas vaginalis. This disease is usually asymptomatic especially for males. The incidence rate of trichomoniasis is on the rise despite many interventions carried out in the form of prevention or education for sexually transmitting diseases. The method of the study is through descriptive survey with cross sectional design. Data were collected by self-administring questionnaires that were completed by students during their formal class hours. Questionnaires were distributed randomly by simple random sampling method. A total of 83 students participated in this study. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the level of knowledge of students from Fakultas Sastra Universitas Sumatera Utara, 2007 batch about trichomoniasis as a sexually transmitted disease. Other purposes of the study are to evaluate the level of knowledge on mode of transmission, symptoms, therapy and prevention for trichomoniasis. Results shows that out of the 83 respondents who were the sample for the study, 50,6 % of them have moderate level of knowledge. Whereby, from the 50, 6 %, 59,5 % of them were female students and 40,5 % of them were male students. Whereas, 49, 4 % of student’s results shows that they have good level of knowledge on trichomoniasis. As a conclusion, the level of knowledge of students in Fakultas Sastra Universitas Sumatera Utara 2007 batch is the moderate level. Therefore, it is important to give formal sexual education on trichomoniasis in order to prevent this infection.
