  • Background: The incidence of breast cancer increases every year and most of the cases are detected at an advanced stage. It has been observed that women can detect 95% of breast cancers and 65% of early stage of breast cancers by themselves. It is estimated that breast self-examination (BSE) may reduce the mortality as much as 18%. BSE is important to detect early breast cancer for better prognosis. Objective: This study is to assess the students of Medical Faculty of the North Sumatera University class of 2005’s knowledge, attitude, and practice to BSE. Method: This study is a descriptive study with a cross-sectional method. The samples are 70 students with a relative accuracy (d) of 0,1. Simple random sampling is used and the data is collected with questionnaires. Data is analyzed with SPSS. Result: The study showed that the students’s knowledge is classified into moderate category (51,4%) and the remaining is classified into good category (48,6%). The attitude is classified into good category (97,1%) and the remaining is classified into moderate category (2,9%). The practice is classified into good category (58,6%) and the remaining is classified into moderate category (32,9%) and insufficient category (8,6%). The behavior is classified into good category (57,1%) and the remaining is classified into moderate category (42,9%).
