  • Depression is highly associated with many chronic diseases, including Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). Clinician assumed that depression linked with low quality of life. Low quality of life will raise the number of these patients morbidity and mortality. This study was conducted to know the effect of depression to quality of life of CKD patients. This study is an analytic survey with cross sectional design.The population is all CKD patients on hemodialysis treatment who are less than 60 year-old of age and more than three months on hemodialysis treatment. 37 samples taken using consecutive sampling method were interviewed using Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) to assessed their depression status and using Kidney Disease Quality of Life-Short Form (KDQOL-SF) to assessed their quality of life. Samples consist of 23 male (62.2%) and 14 female (37.8%). The result showed that the proporsion of depression among patients with CKD on hemodialysis treatment was 64.8%. Mild depression was detected in 21.6% of patients, moderate depression in 27.0%, and severe depression in 16.2% of patients. The mean of the BDI-II score is 19.3 (SD 10.7).The mean of overall health rating KDQOL-SF score is 56.46 (SD 11.9). Chi-Square results showed that depression influenced the quality of life. From the study can be concluded that depression influenced the quality of life of CKD patients who undergo hemodialysis. Most of the quality of life components of depressed patients are lower than those of non-depressed patients. Therefore, there will be some needs of not only physical medical intervention, but also psychiatry intervention.
