- Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is characterized by repeated episodes of collapse and upper airway obstruction during sleep. Episode of obstruction is associated with desaturation of oxyhemoglobin repeatedly during sleep. OSA is associated with excessive daytime sleepiness. Dr. Syahrial MH Sp ENT, also said the death at productive age mainly due to suffering from OSA, who later suffered from complications. OSA is more common in men than women, with a ratio of 7:1. At the age of less than 40 years, OSA occured 25% of men and 10-15% of women, while over the age of 40 years, OSA occured 60% of men and 40% female. The objective of this study is to access the knowledge of students at the University of North Sumatara on Obstructive Sleep Apnea Measure of knowledge was obtain via self-administrated questionnaires composed of 20 question. The questions were about definition of OSA, risk factor associated with OSA and the prevention of OSA. This study is a descriptive study with a cross-section design. A total of 82 students from 2009/2010 batch students were asked to fill the questionnaire. The results showed that 45 (54.9%) of respondents have a high level of knowledge, 31 (37.8%) students have moderate level of knowledge about OSA. 6 (7.3%) respondents have low level of knowledge about OSA. The conclusion is, student should be furnished wit the necessary information on risk factor for OSA and preventive measures that are applicable to the students. This knowledge should allow then to plan effective ways to prevent OSA in the future.
