- The title of this thesis is METAPHOR OF MINANGKABAUNES PARIAMAN DIALECT IN BANJAI VILLAGE MEDAN DENAI DISTRICT MEDAN REGENCY. It deals with three aspects, i.e. (1) the structure of the metaphor, (2) the function of metaphor, and (3) the meaning of the metaphor based on the its structure. Related to the structure of metaphor, the analysis is done by using tree diagram (Alwi, 2003 and Verhaar, 1981). It is done in order to identify the detail contents of each metaphor. Identified elements A:B which construct the structure of the metaphor consists of subject (A) as the identified subject. The forming structure of identified elements is classified into (1) the use of the word bak- ‘be like’, (2)phrase form non-noun or event categories, (3) complex (4) sentence form, (clause form) The contents of metaphor can be classified based on their patterns and the its positions in each act. The function of metaphor can be classified into (1) informative (2) expressive, (3)directive (4)phatic, and (5) aesthetic. The functions are dominated by informative functions, i.e. 47,05% These classifications are based on Leech (1997). Related to the meaning of metaphor, the analysis also used Leech (1997). The meaning of metaphor are categorized into (1) connotative, (2) stylistic, (3) affective, (4) reflective, and (5) colocative.All these types of meanings are exists in the results of the analysis.
