- Background. The preterm infant should be prepared that it would achieved the stage of optimum growth and development as the normal infant born then it would have optimum quality of life as well. One of the effort, it could be done, was given enough nutritional intake that it support the fast processed of growth on the preterm infant than the normal term infant. The aim. To view the increasing of body weight in the preterm infant which given breast feeding (BF), preterm infanf formula (PIF), BF + PIF. Method. The cross sectional study was conducted from February 2006 to June 2006 at Dr Pirngadi Hospital Medan. On the infant birth, it were measured body weight, body length, and head circumference. At the time of discharged from hospital, it were measured again then the result were compared to the rate of growth among the infant that given BF, PIF, and BF + PI. The pair t test independent was used statistically, and the p value < 0,05 is significant. Result.There were 38 preterm infant of 18 boys (47,40%) and 20 girls (52,60%). Only 6 infants had BF (15,60%), PIF (23,60%) and BF + PIF (60,60%). Conclusion. There were increasing of body weight on the three group of infant and statistically valued were significant on the group of PIF and BF + PIF.
