- Soil-transmitted helminths are nemathelminthes parasites to infect human being resulting in retardation in physical growth and intellectual development. The objective of research would be evaluate the efficacy single dose of mebendazole 500 mg alone and in combination with levamisole in treatment of soil-transmitted helminths infection on children of elementary school age in Kelurahan Kenangan, sub district of Percut Sei Tuan, Deli Serdang district. This was a double blind randomized clinical trial, it had been conducted on 176 children of classes 1-6 from six state elementary schools that was divided inti two groups; group I (single treatment by mebendazole 500 mg/single dose) dan group II (combined treatment by mebendazole 500 mg dan levamisole/single dose). The sample of feses was collected for initial data and 21st day after treatment, and then it was examined quantitatively by Kato-Katz method. The Chi-Square test, independent t–test and paired t-test were conducted to analyze the correlation between treatment with cure rate and egg reduction rate. The prevalence of soil-transmitted helminths infection was 63,8%;28,5% of single worm infection, 34,5% of multipe worm infection and 0,82% of three spesies of worm infection. The cure rate of Ascaris lumbricoides and Trichuris trichiura in group I was 94,3% and 68,5% and in group II it was 94,2% and 68,6%, respectively.There was no significant difference in cure rate of Ascaris lumbricoides (p=0.985) and Trichuris trichiura (p=0.993) in both groups of treatment. There was a significant egg reduction rate (p=0.0001) either in Ascaris lumbricoides and Trichuris trichiura infection of both groups in comparison to pre-treatment. It could be the concluded that the efficacy of combined treatment mebendazole with levamisole was as effective as single treatment of mebendazole on soil-transmitted helminths infection in moderate intensity of infection fo ascariasis and mild intensity of infection for trichuriasis.
