- Plant contain various chemical compounds such as polyphenolic compounds which usually used as antibacterial and antioxidant. One of plant contain polyphenolic compounds is bangun-bangun leaf. The purpose of this research is to examine antibacterial and antioxidant of bangun-bangun’s leaf ethanol extract. Sample (bangun-bangun’s leaf) was obtained from Tembung’s area, Deli Serdang District. Extract was obtained by maseration with ethanol. Antibacterial activity was measured by agar difution methode, using punch hole, and then diameter inhibition of bacteri Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli was measured. Antioxidant activity measured by method of the oxidation inhibition of soybean oil during storage at 40oC (0, 3, 5, and 7 days) with BHT as positive control. The result of this research showed that the antibacterial activity of bangun-bangun’s leaf ethanol extract is had large enough, with its concentration 4% had zone inhibition 27,16 mm for Staphylococcus aureus and 24,15 mm for Escherichia coli. The antioxidant activity is increased with the increase of the amount extract added. At 1% of concentration, showed that the antioxidant activity was 50,76%, at 2% of concentration the antioxidant activity was 54,97%. But the antioxidant activity extract with 1% and 2% of concentration was lower than BHT 0,02% (antioxidant activity 58,80%). But at 3% of concentration was higher than BHT which antioxidant activity was 63,89%.
