  • What seems to be today’s lack of deep understanding of what it means to give love and receive it. In today’s world, concepts like insecure attachments; obsession, temporary physical attractions, and mind-numbing chain of weak moments are confused with love. Love is an indispensable aspect of human life, therefore it should come as no surprise to hear that love is always one of the most frequently discussed topics and ended with the most essential and philosophical question: “What is love?” Plato and Rumi appear to be communicating a true meaning of love that comes from a true sense of self-knowledge. This thesis deals with the concept of love in the thought of Plato (428-347 BC) and Jalal al-Din Rumi (1207-1231). Plato’s concept of love based on his Symposium, and in Rumi based on his Mathnawi. The concepts of these two figures are analytically compare by way of their views of love. Althought Plato and Rumi lived in the different eras this thesis will show that their concept of love are quite similar. Both agree that love cannot be defined because love only can explained by experience. Through love man seeks a way to return to the central source from which he has received his being andexistence. The differences between the two figures lie in their different terminologies and expression.
