- This paper will focus on study on the concept of wilâyah in Shi’ism. As we know that study on the concept of wilâyah in Shi’ism is rare and regarded to be the topic of political study rather than mystical discussion. Just like in Sufism, concept wilâyah in Shi’ism is principial and dealing with highest position of humankind that is the Imams. It is about the authority invested in the Imams from the Ahlul Bayt of the Prophet Muhammad as vicegerent of Allah in this earth. Concept wilâyah in Shi’ism is formulated in the concept of Imamate. That means concept wilâyah in Shi’ism related not only the highness of the Imams but also the function of the Imams as the leaders of men in the fields of spiritually especially. The highness positions of the Imams characterized by some principles such as infallibility, divine election, divine knowledge, spiritual guidance and universal authority, will support the description of the concept wilâyah of the Imams in Shi’ism. To support the argumentation that the Imams in Shi’ism reached the stage of wilâyah, it has been proved that there is correlation between wilâyah in Shi’ism with wilâyah in Sufism. As the Sufis claimed that each master is in contact with the Pole or Qutb of the age, in Shi’ism, however, all spiritual functions in every age are inwardly connected with the Imam of the age. Al-Hujwiri said that Allah has chosen some good people and bestowed them the honor of friendship. These selected people are regarded to be His vicegerent on earth, through which Allah manifests His powers in the world. He purifies them; and they have been in existence in the past; they are still there and will continue to be in the world until the day of Resurrection. This explanation is relevance with concept of wilâyah in Twelver-Shiism, that wilâyah is honored to Twelve purified Imams and started from Imam Ali bin Abi Thalib until the recent Imam, that is the hidden Imam, Al-Mahdi. In sufi orders or thariqah, it can be founded the role of the Imams in Shi’ism as the part of the master chain or initiated wilâyah or silsilah before enter to the knowledge of the Prophet Muhammad; such as in the spiritual chain of the Nimatullâhî Order and Tarekat Qadiriyah Wa Naqsyabandiah.
