  • Cardiovascular disease, including myocardial ischemia and stroke, occur as a result of complex set genetic and environmental factors. Stroke is the mayor cause of death among man in the developed world. In addition, WHO has compiled data on over 100 surveys carried out in the age group 35-44, shows 5-10% periodontitis have deep pockets. Furthermore during periodontitis, dental plaque microorganism may disseminate through the blood to infect the vascular endothelium and contribute to the occurrence of atherosclerosis and risk of stroke. In the context of this paper the mechanism of periodontitis which can predispose to atherosclerosis and as risk factors of stroke has been reviewed.
