- Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease complex with metabolic and vascular component and characterized by hyperglycaemia. There are over 200 million people in the world with DM and still be the center of interest because it is the third leading cause of death in USA. Approximately 3-4% of the dentist's adult patient has DM. In uncontrolled DM besides the major symptoms (3P's) there are several oral manifestations such as xerostomia, candidosis, periodontal disease, sialosis, etc. Dental patient with those findings should be screened for hyperglycaemia or referred to a clinical laboratory or physician for screening test. As member of the professional healthcare team, dentist must be able to detect new cases of DM and to render dental care to patients who are already treated for DM without endangering their lives.
