- The effect of prestrain on the stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of the type of 304 stainless steel was investigated in boiling magnesium chloride solution test with U-bend specimen. In this research, the plate of.41SI 304 stainless steel was axially prestrained up until uniformly reaching engineering strain around 10%-25% at the room temperature. Stress corrosion cracking test was carried out using ASTM G-36 standard containing the concentration of 42% MgCI2 solution in 1450C temperature during 288 hours. The results indicated that the SCC of the prestrain specimen was essentially differenifrom others. Intergranular cracking of prestrain material changed into a mixed mode or dominant transgranular when the degree of prestrain was increased. The greater level of prestrain is enhanced SCC susceptibility by shortening failure time and accelerating crack initiation and propagation rates.
