Overview of Ethnic Identity at Initial Level Students in Bandung

  • The development of ethnic identity is a critical facet of adolescence. The process of identity formation starts during adolescence. This research was conducted to obtain an overview of Ethnic Identity at First Year Students of "X" University in Bandung. The methods used in this research was a descriptive method. Statistical test used is the correlation coefficient from Rank Spearman. The measuring instrument used to measure the ethnic identity in shape of the questionnaire, and translated from Multiple Ethnic Identity Measure (Phinney’s MEIM questionnaires) . Measurements performed on the entire population of 200 students. Based on statistical data processing, the results demonstrated that: 47 of students at the stage of unexamined (23.5%), 129 of students are on stage Examined (64.5%), and 24 of student sat the stage of Achieved (12%). The variations of ethnic identity views at First Year Students in "X" University in Bandung were based on the ethnic background of each student. This study found that ethnic group that has most significant ethnic identity status (achieved status) was the Sundanese.
