  • Galactagogues are pharmacological agents, foods, or herbal supplements that help initiate, maintain, or augment milk production. Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum L.) is one of the most herbal galactagogues used worldwide. This study aimed to investigate the effect of fenugreek seed powder on prolactin levels of breastfeeding rats and the bodyweight of the litters. Fenugreek seed powder in three different doses; F1 (330mg/kg BW), F2 (495mg/kg BW), F3 (660mg/kg BW), was administered daily to 30 breastfeeding Wistar rats in three divided doses, for 14 consecutive days. Domperidone (3mg/kg BW), and CMC 10% were used as the positive and negative control, respectively. On the 15th day, serum was taken to measure the prolactin levels using Electrochemiluminescence Immunoassay (ECLIA) method and the bodyweight of the litters was measured. The prolactin levels of F2 (8,73ng/mL) and F3 (9,15ng/mL) groups were significantly increase ( p=0,005; p=0,000). The bodyweight of the litters was highest in the F2 groups (p = 0,042), indicating more breastmilk was produced as the effect of prolactin increase. Fenugreek seed powder has the potential to be used as galactagogues, as it significantly increases prolactin levels and the litters bodyweight.
