  • This research is motivated by the lack of activity and poor student learning outcomes in social studies learning . Factors that cause low activity and student learning outcomes , namely : ( 1 ) Teachers teach only talks. ( 2 ) Teachers only record on the board . ( 3 ) The teacher does not use instructional media ( 4 ) The teacher is not an evaluation of the student . ( 5 ) Students tend to be passive . The purpose of this research is to improve students' learning activities and learning outcomes of students in the subjects of Social Sciences ( IPS ) by using a learning strategy crossword puzzle in sixth grade Elementary School Pictures. Crossword puzzle is a puzzle game which is used as a learning strategy fun , without losing the essence of the ongoing study , to review (review ) materials have been submitted . The review useful to help students recall what material has been delivered . This research is a classroom action research was conducted in two cycles . Subjects in this study were six graders Debt Figure the number of 34 students consisting of 19 male students and 15 female students . Based on the results of the study , the average percentage of student activity increased from the first cycle which is 72 % increase in the second cycle to 94 % . The acquisition has reached a predetermined indicators of success that is equal to 95 % . Average test scores final first cycle is 70.8 with a percentage of 73 % and a mastery learning has increased in the second cycle on average is 80 to 88 % the percentage of mastery learning . Acquisition of learning outcomes in the second cycle has reached an indicator of success is 80 % . This means that the use of learning strategies in crossword puzzles sixth grade social studies can enhance students' learning activities and learning outcomes IPS .
