- ABSTRACT Tile is an important component in the construction field that serves as the cover of the hot sun and rain. A good quality tile is determined by the materials and the manufacturing process, since it will determine the mechanical properties of the tile. Ipomoea Carnea is one type of alternative materials in the manufacture of natural fiber composite materials. This research is conducted to find out the potential of Ipomoea Carnea powder as an alternative material in the manufacture of roof tiles and the effect of variations in the composition of the polymer powder and sand on the mechanical properties of the polymer tile. The method of rooftile manufacture is being held by powder metallurgy process. The powder and sand composition are variated with the precentage of 10% : 50%, 20% : 40%, and 30% : 30%. The composition of 30 % polyester resin and 10 % asphalt is a fixed variable. The process begins with the mixture of the materials as the variable determined, then the materials compacted by 200 kg/cm 2 pressure. The characterization of the mechanic nature comprise the proximate analysis, density and porosity calculation, flexural strength test, and hardness test. The research shows that the characteristic of polymer tile is influenced by powder and sand composition. The characteristic of porosity value reached 0,209%, 0,994% density, 2,270 Mpa flexibility, and 19,1 BHN of optimal hardness. The addition of 10% of powder only increased the hardness value by 0,4%, and decreased the flexural strength up to 0,5%. In this research, the application of Ipomoea Carnea powder unable to fixed. The mechanical nature of polymer tile created, because the flexural value and its hardness stand below the polymer tile quality sold in the market.
