- This research is motivated that the learning IPS at this time is less varied and the teacher's role is more dominant, not involve students to participate in the learning process, so that the resulting lack of ability of understanding the concept of students. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there are differences in the ability of students 'understanding of concepts in social science subjects among students who use learning strategies active type Index Card Match with students who use learning strategies expository and to determine whether the ability of students' understanding of concepts in social science subjects who use the strategy of active learning type Index Card Match is better than the ability of understanding the concept of students who use learning strategies expository. Methods this research is a quasi experimental design with nonequivalen control group design. The population under study is all students of class V SDN Tegal Cabe, while the sample is class VA as experimental class and class VB as the control class. The technique of taking the sample using purposive sampling. The instrument used in this research are instrument test and non-test. The results of this study indicate that there are differences in the ability of students 'understanding of concepts in social science subjects among students who use learning strategies active type Index Card Match with students who use learning strategies expository and ability of the students' understanding of concepts in social science subjects who use the strategy of active learning type Index Card Match is better than the ability of understanding the concept of students who use learning strategies expository.
