- The ability to understand the concept of students is still low in the subjects of social studies, students are still difficult in relating an information to a problem and still difficult to choose a strategy in solving the problem. this study aims to find out how the results of the improvement of learning models start with a question of the ability to understand the concept of students and to determine whether learning learning model start with a question higher than using direct instruction model or direct instruction. The research method used is quasi experimental method nonequivalent type control group design with purposive sampling technique. Population in this research is all class IV SDN Umbul Tengah 1 Serang City with sample that is class IV A as experiment class using learning model start with a question and class IV B as control class using direct instruction model year 2016/2017 on science subject social on the concept of natural appearance. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that there is a difference in the ability to understand the concept between students using learning model start with a question and using direct learning model. this can be proved from the results of calculations using normal and homogeneous Test data: the value of h = 3.49 with dk = n1 + n2 - 2. = 23 + 23 - 2 = 44, α = 0.05 got the value = 2 , 01. So for the Two-Party Test h > ' 3.49> 2.01, then 0 is rejected and accepted. Increased understanding of student concepts in the experimental class is higher than the students' understanding of the control class.
