- This study was carried out to improve students’ ability in writing recount text by using mind-mapping strategy. It was conducted at 8-B class of SMP Attaufiqiyyah Kabupaten Serang academic year 2013/2014 as the subject of the study. The method used in this research was Classroom Action Research (CAR). The classroom action research design applied in this research was a collaborative classroom action research. The researcher collaborated with the English teacher of SMP Attaufiqiyyah Kabupaten Serang as an observer. The CAR was done based on Kemmis and Mc. Taggart’s design consists of two cycles in which each cycle contained four phases, those were planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The data in this research was gathered through observation sheet and writing test. The result of the research showed that there was an improvement on the students’ ability in writing recount text. It can be seen from the mean of pretest score was 56.43. Then, the mean of posttest cycle one score was 66.03 and the mean of posttest cycle two score was 72.53. In addition, there were 3 students (10%) who passed Minimum Mastery Criterion – Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimal (KKM) in the pre-test. Meanwhile, in the cycle 1, there were 12 students (40%) who passed the KKM and it gained which was in the posttest cycle 2 there were 24 students (80%) who passed the KKM, so the criterion of success was achieved. Furthermore, the results of observation showed that the students were motivated in the teaching- learning process during the implementation of mind mapping strategy. Related to the results of the gained data, it can be concluded that mind mapping can improve students’ ability in writing recount text. Key words: Recount Text, Mind Mapping Strategy
