- This research is motivated by low mathematical result learning of students on cognitive aspects, so it is necessary to find alternative learning that can improve students' mathematical result learning. According to Ernest (Argitya, 2010) that learning math is first and foremost is active, with students learning through games, Activities, investigations, projects, discussions, explorations, and inventions. Two models of learning that can be used as an alternative is the Application of learning model Problem Based Learning and Discovery Learning. In addition to external factors that affect student result learning internal factors also affect student result learning one example is the early ability mathematical students. This study aims to determine: (1) Are the results of learning mathematics students using Problem Based Learning model of learning is better than the students who use the learning model Discovery Learning? (2) Is there a difference in the results of students 'mathematics learning in the class using the Problem Based Learning model and the students using the Discovery Learning model based on the students' initial ability? (3) Is there an interaction between the learning model and the initial ability of the students in the Problem Based Learning And Discovery Learning. This research was conducted in SMP Negeri 2 Serang City. The sample selection used cluster random sampling technique, with quasi-experimental method and non-equivalent control group design. The results showed: (1) The result of student's mathematical learning (cognitive aspect) in the class using Problem-Based Learning model is better than the students who use the learning model of Discovery learning. (2) there is difference of mathematical learning result of student based on student's early ability either in class which use learning model of Problem based Learning or in class which use learning model of Discovery learning, where in each category of initial ability that mean value of learning result in class problem based Learning is better than discovery learning class (3) there is no interaction between learning model and student's early ability to student learning outcomes.
