  • This study aims to determine differences in the ability of critical thinking learners through the use of word square learning model with direct learning on social studies subjects social issues. The research method used is quasi experiment with nonequivalent control group research design. Sampling in this research by purposive sampling to choose 2 class as research subject. In this study class IV A consisting of 41 students as experimental class using word square model and class IV C consisting of 39 learners as control class using direct instruction model (direct intruction). Based on the result of research, show that there is difference of word square learning model by using direct instruction (direct intruction) can be seen from test-t that is 4,09 > 1,99, hence Ha accepted and Ho rejected. Critical thinking ability of learners using word square model is higher than learners who use direct instruction model (direct intruction), can be seen from test-t one party that is 4.09> 1.99 then Ha accepted and Ho rejected. Thus it can be concluded that there are differences of learners who use word square model with learners who use direct instruction model (direct intruction) and critical thinking skills of learners who use the word square model is higher than the critical thinking skills of learners who use direct learning model (Direct intruction).
