- This study aimed to determine the effect of peer tutoring method on cognitive abilities and motivation of student learning. A quasi experiment was used with randomized control group only design. This study was conducted at SMPN 2 Ciruas on VII grade 2nd semester academic year 2016/2017. The sampling technique used in this study was random sampling. Data was collected by using cognitive ability tests and learning motivation questionnaire. The average value of the cognitive abilities of students in the experimental class at 72,67 with good criterion while the control class was 56,33 with a sufficient criterion. Average grades for motivation to learn in experimental class of 81,95 with good criterion while the control class of 70,77 with sufficient criteria. Analysis of hypothesis test using t-test with significance level α = 0.05 obtained 0.000 for cognitive abilities and 0.000 for motivation to learn, it can be concluded that the implementation of peer tutoring methods affected to the student’s cognitive abilities and motivation toward the characteristic of living things concept at SMPN 2 Ciruas.
