- ABSTRACT The purpose of the research was to know motivation and cognitive abilities of student’s of class X in SMAN 1 Sajira using models Problem Based Learning (PBL) in subconcepts environmental balance. PBL is an instructional model that has a learning syntax is doing orientation problems, organize the students to learn in groups, organized according to the task of studying the problem, develop and provide solutions to existing problems, presented the results of the analysis and evaluation of the solutions provided. The method used is descriptive method. The population in this research is a class X SMA Negeri 1 Sajira with a sample of class X-3. The sampling technique was conducted by purposive sampling. The instrument used was a questionnaire study of student motivation and objective tests. The questionnaire contains 8 indicators of student motivation, namely duration, frequency activity, persistence, fortitude, aspiration, effort, qualification and direction of attitude. Objective test that is used in the form of the posttest. The research showed 50 % of students have a high level of motivation with an average value of 72,5 and the percentage motivation level is highest in persistence indicator is 79,7 and the lowest level of motivation is the aspiration indicator that is equal to 66,2. Cognitive abilities of students are in the category of simply the average value is 66,7 with the highest number is the percentage of both categories in the amount of 36 % and the lowest in the category of less than 5%. Indicators of the highest ability students are on the second indicator that students are able to define the notion of environmental pollution with an average value of 77,8 is the lowest category and the ability: the ability to analyze problems that occur in the environment with an average value of 59,3 is at less category.
