  • ABSTRACT This study aims to find the motivation to learn and cognitive abilities of students in the subconcepts female reproductive system through the application of learning strategies PQ4R (Preview, Question, Read, Reflect, Recite, Review) and the technique of mind mapping in XI class at SMAN 2 Serang. This study is a descriptive study with variable learning motivation and cognitive abilities of students through the application of learning strategies PQ4R (Preview, Question, Read, Reflect, Recite, Review) and the technique of mind mapping. The population in this study were all students of class XI SMA Serang City 2 2013/2014 school year. The study sample consisted of one class, namely the class XI Science 5. The sampling technique was conducted by random sampling. The technique used for data retrieval, there are two types, namely test and non-test techniques. Engineering tests performed using multiple choice tests to measure students' cognitive abilities and non technical tests conducted by using a questionnaire to measure student motivation. The results show the value of the student's motivation for 76.08 with both categories of students' cognitive abilities and the value of 0.64 with a medium category. Based on the results of this study concluded that the motivation of students of class XI Science 5 on SMAN 2 in Serang included in both categories and cognitive abilities included in the medium category.
