- The petroleum is a non-renewable energy, requirement of fuel was increased, so that the reserve of petroleum was decreased, then alternative energy is needed to overcome. The amount of cow dung and coconut shell will be used as alternative energy as briquettes. The purpose of this research are determine the effects of mesh and drying time on the briquettes characteristics and calorific value of briquettes. Briquetting using a mold tube, the diameter of mold tube is 5 cm, with a pressure of 150 bar, 60% of cow dung and 40% of coconut shell mixture with the addition of tapioca adhesive 1:10. Variable of mesh are 60, 80, 100 mesh, and variable of drying time are 1, 3, 5 days. Then proximate test of briquettes, bomb calorimeter test, and combustion test. Best value of density briquettes is 1.02 g/cm vii 3 at 100 mesh with 1 day of drying time. Best value of calorific is 4,185 cal/g at 80 mesh with 5 days of drying time. Best value of moisture is 6.185% at 60 mesh with 5 days of drying time. Best value of volatile matter is 24.73% at 100 mesh with 5 days of drying time. Best value of fixed carbon is 38.245% at 80 mesh with 5 days of drying time. The conclusion of this research are that the higher value of mesh that produces higher of density value, moisture value, volatile matter value, fixed carbon value, and calorific value, but for ash value and burning rate are lower. The higher value of drying time that produces higher of volatile matter value, fixed carbon value, calorific value, and burning time value, but for density value, moisture value, and ash value are lower.
