- Non Performing Loan is the most crucial for banks as NPL is one of the major causes of the banking crises resulting from increased non performing loans in the form of arrears interest payments, principal loan or both. Worsening NPL (Non Performing Loan) ratio indicates deterioration in quality of the loan portfolio. This research focuses to detect the determinants of non-performing loans for a sample of 5 Commercial Banks in indonesia (State Owned Banks, Foreign Exchange Commercial Banks, Regional Development Banks, and Joint Venture Banks) for the period of 2007-2015. As a group of banks that relies on primary sources of income, commercial banks more vulnerable exposed to Non Performing Loans and Indonesia have faced financial problems of the subprime crisis on 2007. The independent variables used are Return On Asset (ROA) and Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR). The analysis of the data used in this study is Panel Data Model, the estimation method it has used method pooled Least Squares (Fixed Effect). After the application of the method of panel data, the result of partial test (t test) indicates that the variable ROA partially negative and significant effect on the NPL, and variable CAR partially positive and no significant effect on the NPL. Meanwhile, the results of simultaneous test (F test) indicates that the variable of ROA and CAR simultaneously no significant effect on the NPL of Commercial Banks in Indonesia.
