  • The objective of this research is to find out the type of code-switching thatused by the teacher while teaching English subject at the tenth grade of SMAN 1Ciruas. There are two major points that this paper attempts to make. First, toanalyze the type of code-switching based on Hoffman's theory (1991). Second, theteachers’ reason of using code-switching while teaching English subject. Theresearcher used descriptive qualitative method in this study and conductedobservation, recording and interview to collect the data. After observing andanalyzing the whole data, the researcher analyzed the types of code-switching byHoffman’s theory, and presented the data in this research. The types of code-switching by Hoffman’s theory used by the teacher were: (1) Inter-sententialswitching 37 times; (2) Intra-sentential switching 22 times; (3) Emblematic / tagswitching 4 times. In accordance with the result of the research, a structuredinterview regarding the code switching used was conducted to know the reason ofteachers’ code-switching; it was used to clarify the meaning for the students. Atthe first the teacher used English to explain the material but then switched it intoBahasa Indonesia to clarify the meaning for the students because the students’lack of vocabulary.The result of the research, it could be found that there werethree types of code-switching that used in teaching, and the factor that causedcode-switching isrepetition used for clarification.
