  • Keyword : Implementation, Debate, Speaking. The objectives of the research is to describe the implementation of debate technique in teaching speaking to the students in Istibank Surakarta. This is a qualitative research. The research was conducted at Istibank Surakarta located in Jl. Ir. Sutami No. 46 Sekarpace, Surakarta Telp/Fax : 0271 630 029. The subjects of the research were the students of English course in Istibank Surakarta in learning speaking using debate technique. The data of this research were taken from observation and interview. In analyzing the qualitative data, the researcher used interactive model of analysis data by Miles and Huberman, it includes conducted data collection, data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusion. The result: (1) the implementation of debate technique encourages the students to speak communicatively. It was indicated during the debating activity, the students were able to build the case from the given motion. It was also revealed that there were many rebuttals during the debate session, it indicates that the students understand the case well. Therefore, teachers need to be creative in teaching. Teachers also need to know the students‟ psychological condition.
