Advisor : Rochmat Budi Santoso, S.pd.,M.pd Keywords : Improving, Reading Comprehension, Learning by Doing The objectives of this research are: (1) to describe the implementation of the students’ reading comprehension after teaching by using learning by doing at the seventh grade student of SMP N 1 Wonosari 2015/2016, (2) to know the improvement of reading comprehension of students at the seventh grade of SMP N 1 Wonosari 2015/2016 after teaching by using learning by doing. The method used in this research was Classroom Action Research (CAR). It was started from March until April 2016 for the seventh grade of SMP N 1 Wonosari. The subject of the research was the students of class seventh about 34 persons. This research was conducted in two cycles of actions with four meetings in cycle 1 and four meeting in cycle 2 consisting of planning, acting, observing and reflecting in each cycle and ended by post-test. In this research, the researcher applied the learning by doing to improve students’ reading comprehension. The researcher collected the data by using observation, interview, and tests. The researcher analyzed the data by using three stages to analyze qualitative data; they are data reduction, data display, taking conclusion, meanwhile, the significant improvement of the students’ achievement analyzed by using means of test. Research finding showed that learning by doing can improve students’ reading comprehension. The improvement of the students’ reading comprehension covers reading to find the main idea, reading to determine the details information either explicit or implicit information, reading to analyze a text to determine its generic structure, and reading to find the vocabulary. The improvement of students’ reading comprehension also supported by the achievement of students’ test score. In cycle 1, the mean score of pre-test is 57.85 and the mean score of post-test is 73.97 In cycle 2, the mean score of post-test is 81.11. The result of students’ improvement are the implementation of learning by doing be able to attract the students’ interest and motivated them to follow the reading English, and also learning by doing make learning reading easier and more improve the understanding of reading.
