  • ABSTRACT Fitri Widyaningsih. 2017. A Correlation Study Between Parents’ Education Background and Vocabulary Mastery toward Speaking Ability at The Eighth Grade of MTs N Boyolali in Academic Year 2016/2017. Thesis. Surakarta: English Education Program, Islamic Education and Teacher Training Faculty. Advisor : Zainal Arifin, M.Pd. Key Words : Correlation Study, Parents’ Education Background, Vocabulary Mastery, Speaking Ability The objectives of the research are to determine the correlation between (1) parents’ education background and speaking ability; (2) vocabulary mastery and speaking ability; (3) parents’ education background and vocabulary mastery toward speaking ability. This research is correlation study. The research was carried out at MTs N Boyolali in April 2017. The population of this study was the eighth grade students of MTs N Boyolali in Academic Year 2016/2017. The sample of this study are 8G, 8H, and 8J, consisting of 100 students to be the subject of the research. The sampling technique used is cluster random sampling. The instruments in collecting the data were test and questionnaire. The test was used to get the data of vocabulary mastery and speaking ability. The questionnaire was used to get the data of parents’ education background. The researcher used Pearson Product Moment formula to know the coefficient correlation between parents’ education background (X1) toward speaking ability (Y) and vocabulary mastery (X2) toward speaking ability (Y), while to correlate parents’ education background (X1) and vocabulary mastery (X2) toward speaking ability (Y) the researcher used multiple linier regression. The results of the research are (1) there is positive correlation between parents’ education background (X1) and speaking ability (Y) because the coefficient of correlation robtained is higher than rtable (0.459 > 0.195) and the contribution of parents’ education background to speaking ability is 21.1%. (2) there is positive correlation between vocabulary mastery (X2) and speaking ability (Y) because the coefficient of correlation robtained is higher than rtable (0.424 > 0.195) and the contribution of vocabulary mastery to speaking ability is 18.0%. (3) there is positive correlation between parents’ education background (X1) and vocabulary mastery (X2) toward speaking ability (Y) because Fobtained is higher than Ftable (16.006 > 1.960) and the contribution of parents’ education background and vocabulary mastery toward speaking ability is 24.8%. So, alternative hypothesis is accepted and null hypothesis is rejected. The conclusion of this research is there is positive correlation between parents’ education background and vocabulary mastery toward speaking ability.
