This research is aimed to investigate the difficulties of the English Education Department students’ in subtitling class related to the cultural differences in the sixth semester students of IAIN Surakarta in academic year 2016/2017 and to investigate the dominant strategy mostly used by the English Education Department students’ in subtitling project of Hansel & Gretel - World Famous English Fairy Tale (Story) in Cartoon Animation by Jingle Toons in the sixth semester students of IAIN Surakarta in academic year 2016/2017. The research used a descriptive qualitative research with purposive sampling. In the research, the researcher used transcription sheets of the students with 440 raw data in the students’ project of subtitling Hansel & Gretel - World famous English fairy tale (story) in cartoon animation by Jingle Toons as the data source and questionnaire to investigate the difficulties of the students in subtitling class related to the cultural differences. Research instruments are document and questionnaire. To validate the data, the researcher used expert judgment that has certificate of translator. Method and technique of data collection is documentation of the film. In analyzing the difficulties of the students, the researcher used theory of Nida. In analyzing the subtitling strategies of the students’ project, the researcher used theory of Schjoldager that develops Gottlieb’s strategies. The result of this research shows that although the students have difficulties in subtitling class related to the cultural differences, the students do not find all the difficulties related to the cultural differences in the students’ project. The students only have difficulty in social culture. Difficulties about Ecological problem, material culture, linguistic culture and religious culture do not find in the students’ project. While the dominant strategy mostly used in the students’ project is calque strategy with 58%. Then, paraphrase is the second rank with 28% and addition is the third rank with 5%. Deletion is applied for 4%. Condensation is the fifth rank with 3% and substitution is applied only for 2%.
