M.Hum Key Words : Strategies, Teaching, Vocabulary The objective of the research were 1) To find the strategies used by the English teacher in teaching vocabulary at the seventh grade students of SMP Modern Islamic School (MIS) Surakarta in academic year 2014/2015. 2) To find the response of the students toward the implementation of teacher strategies in teaching vocabulary at the seventh grade students of SMP Modern Islamic School (MIS) Surakarta in academic year 2014/2015. The researcher used descriptive qualitative method. In this case, descriptive qualitative method was used to describe English teachers‟ strategies in teaching English vocabulary at seventh grade of SMP MIS Surakarta in academic year 2014/2015. On the other word this is described about strategies of English teachers in teaching vocabulary in their class. The subject of this research is the teachers‟ of English. The researcher used observation and interview for technique of collecting data. To get the validity of data the researcher used trustworthiness Firstly, the researcher observes teaching learning process at seventh grade of SMP Modern Islamic School (MIS) Surakarta as the document. Secondly, the researcher interviewed the teacher of English as the validity of data. Besides that, the researcher also interviewed the students at seventh grade of SMP MIS Surakarta. The research findings presented and discussed the answer of the research problem. The findings were focused vocabulary skills of the students in the class room. The result showed that there were three strategies of mastering English vocabulary. They were: using synonyms strategy, using picture strategy, and using opposite strategy, and it was found that the students had a good responses to the teacher strategies in teaching vocabularies. They could enjoy the process in teaching and learning process. By using synonym, antonym and identifying picture strategies the students could remember the new words easier.
